Cello Listening Gallery.

A cello listening gallery could go in a number of directions and include thousands of names. Therefore, I have decided to begin by exploring well known cellists and repertoire anecdotally. We will explore cellists of the past I have strong ties to and the great players I have had lessons with, in the hope they will inspire you too. By exploring the gallery you will also see the players that have inadvertently shaped my playing and teaching. (That is not to say I agree with everything they say and do!)

Where it all began?

Pablo Casals: Father of Modern Cello Playing

Casals re-popularized the cello at the beginning of the 20th century, and rightly takes much credit for cementing the place of the cello as a standard solo instrument today. In this recording he plays the now famous Bach Prelude, which was as good as lost until Casals rediscovered it. Casals was the teacher of Paul Tortelier, my own professors teacher.

The Great French Cellists

Paul Tortelier: Charm and Technique

France, Paris in particular has been producing great cellists at least since the middle of the 1700’s. Here is Paul Tortelier, my professors teacher. Seen as one of the greatest cellists of all time. My professor would share how he was a bit of an olympian of a cellist, doing a hundred or more pushups before playing every scale on the cello faster than anyone. His students would often have scale competitions in public!

The Greatest Talent

Jacqueline Du Pre: and the Elgar Cello Concerto

Du pre was the best friend of my cello professor. The greatest cellist of all time Rostropovich said that Du Pre was in fact a better cellist than him. Du pre’s interpretative skills turned Elgar’s poorly received concerto into one of the most loved concertos of all time.
